Aging-in-Place Bathroom Remodeling — Serving Houston & Surrounding Areas
5-Star Rated
Trusted by Houston-area homeowners for aging-in-place remodeling
Stay in the Home You Love — Safely & Comfortably
As we age, the bathroom becomes one of the most dangerous rooms in the home. Falls in the bathroom account for a significant share of serious injuries among seniors — yet most bathrooms were not designed with aging in mind. River Creek Builders specializes in transforming standard bathrooms into safe, accessible, beautiful spaces that allow you or your loved ones to remain at home for years to come.
Moving to an assisted living facility can cost $4,000–$7,000 per month in the Houston area. A thoughtfully remodeled bathroom may cost a fraction of that and allows your family to stay in the comfort and familiarity of your own home. We have completed aging-in-place bathroom remodels across Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, Pearland, The Woodlands, and the greater Houston metro area.

Aging-in-Place Modifications We Provide
Every home and every need is different. River Creek Builders offers a full range of accessibility modifications — from simple grab bar installs to complete bathroom transformations. Here is what we do:
Walk-In Showers
A walk-in shower eliminates the high step of a traditional tub, dramatically reducing fall risk. Our walk-in shower installations feature:
- Low-profile or zero-threshold entry
- Built-in teak or tile bench seating
- Handheld, adjustable showerhead
- Anti-slip textured tile flooring
- Minimum 36″ door width — up to roll-in width
- Fold-down wall seat options
- Recessed storage niches at reachable heights
Zero-Entry (Curbless) Showers
Also called a “roll-in shower,” a zero-entry or curbless shower has no lip or threshold at all — the floor transitions seamlessly from the bathroom to the shower pan. This design is ideal for wheelchair users and walker users. Key features:
- Fully barrier-free floor transition
- Linear drain or point drain with slope engineering
- Minimum 36″×36″ to 60″×36″ dimensions
- ADA-compliant layout options
- Wide selection of tile styles — looks upscale, not medical
- Optional shower curtain or frameless glass panel
Door Widening
Standard interior doors are 28″–30″ wide — too narrow for most wheelchairs (which require 32″–36″ clear width) and difficult for walkers. We widen bathroom and bedroom doorways to meet ADA guidelines:
- Frame removal, structural modification & rebuild
- New wider door, frame, and casing installation
- Drywall repair and finish painting
- Lever-style door handles for easy grip
- Pocket door or barn door conversion where space is tight
- Offset hinges (add 2″ of clearance with no structural work)
Grab Bar Installation
Properly installed grab bars are one of the highest-impact safety upgrades available. River Creek Builders installs bars that are both functional and attractive — not the industrial-looking hardware of the past:
- Toilet-side grab bars (ADA placement: 33″–36″ height)
- Shower/tub entry bars and back wall bars
- Weight-rated to 250–500 lbs depending on model
- Mounted into studs or with toggle anchors rated for tile
- Decorative finishes: brushed nickel, bronze, chrome, matte black
- Designer models that double as towel bars
Walk-In Tubs
For seniors who still enjoy soaking baths, walk-in tubs provide a door on the side of the tub that swings open — no stepping over a high tub wall. Features include:
- Inswing or outswing door options
- Soaking, air jet, and whirlpool models
- Fast-drain technology (important for door-seal tubs)
- Built-in anti-slip floor texture
- Low step entry (typically 3″–4″)
- Thermostatic controls and a handheld showerhead
Comfort-Height Toilets & Raised Seats
Standard toilets sit at 15″ — rising from this height is difficult for people with arthritis, hip replacements, or limited mobility. ADA-compliant comfort-height toilets sit at 17″–19″ and dramatically reduce strain. We install:
- ADA-height toilets (17″–19″ seat height)
- Bidet seats with a remote control for reduced bending
- Toilet safety frames and arms
- Flush lever placement on the accessible side
Non-Slip Flooring
Wet bathroom floors are a leading cause of falls. We install and resurface bathroom floors with safety-first materials:
- Textured porcelain or ceramic tile (COF ≥ 0.6 for wet areas)
- Anti-slip coatings for existing tile surfaces
- Slip-resistant vinyl plank (comfortable underfoot)
- Smooth transition strips between surface types
- Radiant floor heating options for comfort
Lighting & Lever Hardware
Visibility is crucial for safe bathroom navigation, especially at night. We can upgrade:
- Night lights and motion-sensor lighting for nighttime safety
- Higher-lumen LED fixtures for reduced-vision needs
- Illuminated light switches at lower heights
- Lever-style faucet handles (easier with arthritis than knobs)
- Lever door handles throughout the home
- Rocker light switches vs. small toggle styles
Accessible Vanity & Storage
Bathroom storage and vanity design can be adapted for seated use and reduced reach ranges:
- Roll-under vanity clearance for wheelchair users
- Insulated pipes under sink to prevent burns
- Pull-out shelving at reachable heights (15″–48″)
- Side-opening cabinet hinges
- Single-lever or touchless faucets
- Lowered mirror placement
Before & After: Standard vs. Aging-in-Place Bathroom
Standard Bathroom (Before)
- High-threshold tub — difficult to step over
- 28" doorway — too narrow for wheelchair or walker
- Slick porcelain floor — no anti-slip surface
- No grab bars — nothing to hold onto
- Low 15" toilet — painful to rise from
- Round knob handles — hard with arthritic hands
- Dim lighting — poor visibility at night
- High vanity storage — hard to reach when seated
After River Creek Builders
- Zero-entry walk-in shower — no step at all
- 36" ADA-width doorway — wheelchair and walker friendly
- Textured anti-slip tile — rated for wet areas
- Strategically placed grab bars — toilet, shower, entry
- 18" comfort-height toilet — easy to sit and rise
- Lever faucets and hardware — easy grip for all
- Motion-sensor night lights — safe for midnight trips
- Roll-under vanity and pull-out shelving at arm's reach
